11/17/11 -- BATH, Maine. A Bath Iron Works (BIW) employee stands atop a section of the hull of USS Zumwalt, currently in construction at BIW as Ann Zumwalt, daughter of U.S. Navy Admiral Elmo "Bud" Zumwalt and ship's co-sponsor, speaks to the assembled crowd last Thursday afternoon before welding her initials into a plaque which will be placed on the keel of USS Zumwalt, named for her father, currently in production at BIW. Admiral Elmo "Bud" Zumwalt's adult children came to BIW today to participate in a ceremony commemorating the keel laying of DDG 1000, named in honor of their father, who passed away in 2000. The plate bears the initials of the children, including Elmo R. Zumwalt III, who died in 1988 of Agent-Orange induced cancer. Photo by Roger S. Duncan.
