The climber to achieve the fastest time won. Organizer Tim Lindsay of Scarborough said, "It's a fun event and we are a supportive community . . . we learn and are able to share best practices in safety -- while still competing against each other. Seth Moody, a professional arborist from Caribou and Camden Maine climbs 42 feet straight up to a ring a bell while competing in a tree climbing competition in Library Park in Bath on Saturday afternoon. Six professional arborists from around New England raced against each other in several different events. In this event climbers had to hoist themselves up the rope using a technique known as "footlock" because they shim up a harness rope by wrapping it over their foot and sliding a chair up to the top. Competitor Bear Scovil of Manchester Vt. said, "This event requires more agility than it does strength. You'll see the best climbers develop a rhythm of swinging back and forth as they move up the rope." • 4/15/08 -- BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Maine Dept. of Transportation (MDOT) employee Mike Landry cuts away a section of steel beam from the overpass over Route 1 at Cook's Corner on Tuesday afternoon. The bridge is being repaired because it was struck by a vehicle which exceeded the clearance of the bridge in November, 2007. MDOT Project Engineer Bill Doukas expects bridge reconstruction to be completed by Memorial Day weekend. The $500,000 project was funded entirely by the insurance settlement of the vehicle which hit the bridge. This bridge, with 14 feet seven inches of clearance, has been hit three times in the last three years according to Doukas. With this in mind MDOT is planning to add an early warning alarm system which would alert drivers of oversized vehicles if their load's height exceeded the clearance of the bridge. The system is planned to be operational by this summer. Photo by Roger S. Duncan.

  • 3/4/11 -- BRUNSWICK, Maine. Tyler Carl, of South China, an employee of G&E Roofing, pushes snow from the roof of Jordan Acres Elementary School in Brunswick on Friday morning. A portion of the main support beam over a classroom buckled on Thursday night due to the weight of snow and ice. Noone was hurt, and interior damage was minimal but school was closed that day as a precaution. .After the discovery on Thursday morning, Greg Bartlett, Asst. Superintendant made the call send to children home. " I didn't want to take any chances, " he said on Friday. A team of local engineers assessed the building over the weekend and determined that the building was safe for normal operations. .According to Bartlett, in a conversation on Tuesday, braces have been left in place on the split wooden beam, despite the engineer's assessment that they are no longer necessary. .Bartlett has ordered a series of steel "Saddle Detail" supports which will reinforce several beams around the school. Plans to install the Saddle Details are underway for April vacation. The cost of this repair is yet to be established, but, the amounts will be made public soon, Bartlett said. © Roger S.
