  • 11/17/11 -- BATH, Maine. This plaque, bearing the initials of the children of U.S. Navy Adm. Elmo R. "Bud" Zumwalt, will be placed on the keel of USS Zumwalt, behind, currently in production at BIW. Admiral Elmo "Bud" Zumwalt's adult children came to BIW today to participate in a ceremony commemorating the keel laying of DDG 1000, named in honor of their father, who passed away in 2000. A Bath Iron Works (BIW) employee stands atop a section of the hull of USS Zumwalt, currently in construction at BIW as Ann Zumwalt, daughter of U.S. Navy Admiral Elmo "Bud" Zumwalt and ship's co-sponsor, speaks to the assembled crowd last Thursday afternoon before welding her initials into a plaque which will be placed on the keel of USS Zumwalt, named for her father, currently in production at BIW. The 509 foot ship, named for Lieutenant Michael Murphy, whose bravery under fire in Afghanistan in June, 2005 led to his posthumous receipt of the Medal of Honor, was Christened by his mother, Maureen Murphy, of New York. .The ceremony included speeches by Maine Governor Paul LePage, Chief of Naval Operations - Admiral Gary Roughead, Senator Olympia Snowe, Representatives Mike Michaud and Chellie Pingree as well as ship sponsor, Maureen and Dan Murphy, parents of Lieutenant Murphy.   • 5/10/08 -- BATH, Maine. The U.S. Navy Christened DDG-106, as USS Stockdale on Saturday morning at Bath Iron Works. Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale was a well-known Prisoner of War in Vietnam and earned the Congressional Medal of Honor. He passed away on 2005. Admiral Stockdale's widow, Sybill Bailey Stockdale did the formal honors of breaking the bottle on the bow as his granddaughter, Elizabeth Eiseman Stockdale, served as Maid of Honor.  Maine Sen. Susan Collins, and Reps Tom Allen and Mike Michaud spoke at the ceremony. Several Medal of Honor winners and former POWs attended and were honored as part of the ceremony. Photo by Roger S. Duncan.
