  • 11/9/10 -- WEST BATH, Maine. Asplundh Tree Crew Foreman Mike Lord cuts off a section of tree trunk which was hanging over the top of a power line on Tuesday afternoon on Butler Head in West Bath. Tree and electrical crews from as far away as New York State spread across the Mid-Coast Region on Monday and Tuesday, cleaning up storm damage. Power was restored to nearly all customers by the end of the day, Tuesday. Lord said, "Our whole goal is to get these trees down without damage to the wires -- or the homeowners property." A fellow Asplundh foreman, Mike Morris said, "There were over 100 broken poles in this area -- that's what takes a long time [to repair]." Roger S. Duncan / For The Forecaster.

  • 4/15/08 -- BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Maine Dept. of Transportation (MDOT) employee Mike Landry cuts away a section of steel beam from the overpass over Route 1 at Cook's Corner on Tuesday afternoon. The bridge is being repaired because it was struck by a vehicle which exceeded the clearance of the bridge in November, 2007. MDOT Project Engineer Bill Doukas expects bridge reconstruction to be completed by Memorial Day weekend. The $500,000 project was funded entirely by the insurance settlement of the vehicle which hit the bridge. This bridge, with 14 feet seven inches of clearance, has been hit three times in the last three years according to Doukas. With this in mind MDOT is planning to add an early warning alarm system which would alert drivers of oversized vehicles if their load's height exceeded the clearance of the bridge. The system is planned to be operational by this summer. Photo by Roger S. Duncan.
